Andy Astor, President & Chief Executive Officer
An entrepreneurial technology executive with over 35 years of operating and financial experience, Andy Astor joined Nephros in early 2017, as Chief Financial Officer. He was named Chief Operating Officer in 2019, and Chief Executive Officer and Director in August 2020. Prior to Nephros, he was President and CFO of OpenSCG, a software technology firm that was acquired in 2018 by Amazon Web Services. From 2013 to 2015, Mr. Astor was Managing Director at Synechron, a global technology consultancy. From 2009 to 2013, he was Vice President, Technology at Asurion, where he led a 1,000-staff software development division. From 2004 to 2008, he was co-founder and CEO of EnterpriseDB, an open-source software firm for which he raised over $25 million in venture capital and spearheaded strategic partnerships with IBM and NTT Data. From 2002 to 2004 Mr. Astor was Vice President of Web Services Strategy at webMethods, a publicly traded company that was subsequently acquired by Software AG for $546 million. While at webMethods Mr. Astor also served on the Board of Directors of the Web Services Interoperability Organization (WS-I). Prior to that, he spent several years as Vice President of Transactional Products at Dun & Bradstreet (NYSE: DNB), and held various roles at Ernst & Young, MCI Systemhouse, and American Management Systems. Mr. Astor received his Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics from Clark University and his MBA from The Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania.
Monet Carnahan, Vice President, Dialysis Products
Mrs. Carnahan joined the company as Director of Dialysis Products in August of 2015. She is a Registered Nurse with over 10 years of nursing experience in Nephrology and is a subject matter expert in chronic kidney disease, transplantation, vascular access, and end-stage renal disease with both in-center and home therapy. Mrs. Carnahan was previously the Program Manager of Renal Care Coordinators with Fresenius Medical Care (FMC). At FMC managed National Accounts and Employees across the United States, and worked with specific dialysis clinics to identify needs, develop and implement algorithms to improve patient outcomes. Mrs. Carnahan has experience with critical care where she started her career at the Tennessee Valley Health Care System in Nashville, TN. Mrs. Carnahan received her Nursing Degree from Motlow State. She was recently a member of a CMS Technical Expert Panel for Vascular Access, and currently reviews publications for ANNA journals, educational textbooks, and modules.
Greg Lucas, President, Aether Water Systems
Mr. Lucas is the founder (2011) and President of Aether Water Systems, acquired by Nephros in 2018. Aether designs and develops water filtration systems, including new product development, OEM/ODM design, and repetitive and process manufacturing. Prior to founding Aether, Mr. Lucas was founder and President of Water Logic Systems, which designed and developed reverse osmosis systems for industrial and commercial applications. Mr. Lucas’ career experience includes global distribution and procurement sourcing, production manufacturing systems, and RO system development. He holds various certifications for water filtration design and development.
Michael Milman, Vice President, Research & Development
Mr. Milman has over 15 years of experience bringing new products to market in the electronics and medical devices industries. Mr. Milman focuses on the development and commercialization of medical and commercial products and runs the Nephros Product Development Program. Prior to Nephros, Mr. Milman held several positions at Stryker bringing new products through manufacturing to market, innovating coating applications, and research and development of custom implant products. Mr. Milman holds a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Lehigh University and several advanced engineering certifications.
Kimothy Smith, DVM, PhD Vice President, Pathogen Detection Systems Nephros, Inc.
Kimothy Smith, DVM, PhD has a deep background in conducting research programs and building health-related infrastructure. Prior to joining Nephros, Dr. Smith was co-founder and COO of McCarthy & Smith Consulting, specializing in Biosurveillance, Bioforensics, Biodefense, and Biosecurity. From 2014 to 2017 he was Professor of Advanced Analytics at the Desert Research Institute in Reno, Nevada, and from 2012 to 2014 was Professor of Microbiology and Epidemiology at the University of Nevada School of Community Health Sciences. Before that, he served as Chief Science Officer for ExcitePCR Corp.
From 2005 to 2008, Dr. Smith served in a variety of roles at the US Department of Homeland Security (DHS), including Director of the National Biosurveillance Integration Center (NBIC). Prior to that, he was with Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in a variety of roles focused on Chemical and Biological National Security and related areas. Before that, he was Assistant Professor, Research at Northern Arizona University.
Dr. Smith earned his BS in Biochemistry and his Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine from Oklahoma State University then was a practicing veterinarian for almost ten years. He earned his Ph.D. in molecular epidemiology from Louisiana State University in 1999, where he was curator of the Worldwide Bacillus anthracis collection.
Shane Sullivan VP, Sales Nephros, Inc.
Shane Sullivan has spent nearly two decades in sales leadership roles in the healthcare, life science and biopharmaceutical industry. He brings industry experience, an extensive professional network, and strong customer focus to our team at Nephros, which he joined in 2012.
Prior to Nephros, Mr. Sullivan led the sales team at Saxton Bradley with a focus on the healthcare and scientific market. Before that, he was the Western Regional Sales Manager at Thermo Scientific (NYSE: TMO) for nearly 11 years, where he led the $175 million laboratory furnishings and airflow products division to ten consecutive quarterly double-digit increases in the Western Region. Prior to Thermo, Mr. Sullivan was with Applied Instruments, where he represented a variety of equipment manufacturers focused on solutions for the healthcare, life science, and biopharmaceutical research markets, helping to grow the business, strengthen the company’s roots in the region and develop a strong understanding of the distribution market. Prior to that, at MDT Castle, he led the launch and direct sales efforts of their life science and pharmaceutical sterilization business, which ultimately contributed to the merger that formed Getinge-Castle.
Mr. Sullivan earned his undergraduate degree in Business Administration from the University of Southern California.
Vashone Thomas, Vice President, Quality & Regulatory
With over 10 years’ experience in the medical device, laboratory, and scientific product industries, Mrs. Vashone R. Thomas joined Nephros in January of 2018, as the Director of Quality Assurance and Regulatory Affairs. As the Director of Quality Assurance and Regulatory Affairs, Mrs. Thomas is responsible for leading and strategically directing the organization in matters surrounding Quality and Regulatory, and is accountable for the design, development, execution and administration of the QMS in meeting all compliance requirements nationally and globally. Prior to Nephros, Mrs. Thomas has successfully implemented and maintained ISO13485, QMS, 510(K) and product submissions, for Integrated Dental Systems, as well as, implemented and maintained ISO9001 and ISO17025 compliance at Applied DNA Sciences. Mrs. Thomas holds a Master of Science degree from Pace University, a Bachelor of Arts from the University at Buffalo and is a Lead ISO13485 Certified Auditor.
